TRANSITIONING TO A
NET ZERO EMISSIONS ECONOMY

The Government Procurement Rules support sustainable and inclusive procurement through the promotion of good practices for procurement planning, approaching the supplier community and contracting.

A key focus of the Rules is the importance of open competition – giving all businesses the chance to participate, and giving them enough time to respond to opportunities properly. They also help to align New Zealand procurement practices with international best practices, encourage more strategic procurement approaches, foster competition and innovation, resulting in better solutions, and promote broader environmental, social, cultural and economic outcomes.

Transitioning to a net zero emissions economy considers selecting those products and services that have a high impact on the environment over their life-cycle and address these first, for example, fleet vehicles, analysing the market to determine whether alternative options are available that produce lower emissions or less waste, and use of sustainable procurement to offer significant cost savings, for example through lower energy bills, and reduced spending on unnecessary goods and services.

“Visibility in Sustainability” Campaign

Henderson Demolition's "Visibility in Sustainability" campaign was launched to enhance transparency and showcase the company’s commitment to sustainable practices. This initiative aimed to improve communication with both clients and the wider community about the company's environmental efforts.

The campaign involved publicly sharing key data on waste diversion and recycling, providing clear evidence of Henderson Demolition’s positive impact on the environment. By making this information accessible, the company cemented its commitment to sustainability and resource management.

Henderson Demolition also actively participated in prestigious sustainability awards, including the Sustainable Business Awards, Tāmaki Makaurau Zero Waste Awards (of which we were a finalist!), and the New Zealand Demolition and Asbestos Association Awards. These accolades highlighted the company's leadership in promoting sustainable practices within the industry.

A key milestone in the campaign was achieving ISO 14001 certification, which formally recognized the company’s compliance with international environmental management standards. This certification underscored Henderson Demolition’s ongoing efforts to minimize its environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Waste Diversion

At Henderson Demolition Ltd, we are dedicated to being a responsible demolition and asbestos removal company that prioritises waste diversion and sustainable practices. Our Waste Minimization Policy is a testament to our commitment to reducing waste generation and conserving resources while protecting the environment.

We focus on waste reduction and minimization at every operational stage. By prioritising deconstruction over traditional demolition whenever possible, we aim to salvage and reuse valuable materials. Our waste separation and recycling programs are implemented at all our sites, ensuring that materials are carefully sorted and processed to maximize recycling and reuse.

We actively pursue opportunities to repurpose salvaged materials and partner with local recycling facilities to responsibly dispose of waste. Our efforts extend to identifying materials that can be sold or donated to community organizations, contributing to a circular economy.

In our asbestos removal operations, we adhere strictly to New Zealand regulations, ensuring the proper containment, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials. We employ certified personnel and maintain comprehensive records of all asbestos-related activities.

Our commitment to waste tracking and reporting enables us to monitor waste generation, recycling rates, and disposal methods, allowing for data-driven improvements in our practices. Through employee training and awareness initiatives, we empower our team to understand the importance of waste minimization and responsible waste handling.

“Supplier Diversity for Increased Diversion” Initiative

At Henderson Demolition, we understand that our role in the "take-make-waste" model positions us at the bottom of the waste hierarchy. However, instead of being limited by this reality, we focus on building robust relationships with a diverse range of downstream vendors to maximize waste reduction and recycling efforts. By strategically selecting local facilities based on material type and disposal costs, we can allocate more budget towards skilled labour for deconstruction, ultimately minimizing waste.

Our innovative approach involves leveraging our extensive network of up to 30 hiring clients on approximately 300 projects annually. This creates a unique opportunity to educate and influence new teams about responsible waste management practices. With our enhanced estimating formula, we evaluate a multitude of factors—from access widths and material types to fuel efficiency and vendor requirements—to present clients with sustainable options that prioritize refurbishment and reuse before recycling or disposal.

Since August 2020, our commitment to waste recovery has resulted in reclaiming $200,000 worth of reusable materials and preventing an impressive 100,000 tonnes of waste from reaching landfills. With an average diversion rate of around 84%, we are dedicated to creating a more sustainable future in construction by promoting the use of recycled materials in new builds and renovations.
